GOD’S WORD FOR OCTOBER 5

OCTOBER 5

OUR PERSONAL PROMISES

1 Timothy 6:6

“Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”

1 Thessalonians 5:23

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Ps 85:8

“I will hear what God the LORD will speak, for He will speak peace to His people and to His saints;

But let them not turn back to folly.”

James 3:17-18

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.  Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”

Isaiah 57:15

“For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:

‘I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit,

To revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.’”

2 Corinthians 2:15

“For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.”

This month we will read choices from Charles Spurgeon’s (known affectionately as the “prince of preachers”)  devotional, “Beside Still Waters.”   It’s no secret that this world system is getting more evil by the day.  We have to stand strong in the Lord and look to Him more than ever to get through, and to be guided through, what is in the future……..known and allowed  by Him alone…..as well as whatever personal things we are experiencing in our lives.

PASTOR SPURGEON:

We are all to some measure, I suspect, dissatisfied with our lives.  The great majority are always on the fly.  They never settle; they never light on any tree to build their nest.  They are always fluttering from one tree to another; this tree is not green enough, that one is not beautiful enough, this one is not picturesque enough.  They are always on the wing and never build a peaceful nest.

Luther compared the Christian’s contentment to a little bird in the tree:  he fed himself tonight, but he does not know where tomorrow’s breakfast is.  He sits there while the wind rocks the tree; he shuts his eyes and puts his little head under his wing and sleeps.  When he wakes in the morning, he will sing:

“Mortals cease from toil and sorrow:  God provided for tomorrow.”

Few can say, I want nothing else.  I want but little here.  I am satisfied.  I am content.”  We are like sailors who never get to port, like arrows that never reach the target.

This is why we need Christ.  Why we need to know for sure that He is the only reason we would be saved.  Without Him, we have no chance of escaping hell because of our sin, which bars us from heavenly habitation.

After that, when you have repented and are living for Him, even in this life, what would your future be if you did not have Christ?  Even if it is bitter and dark, it does not matter as long as Christ your Lord sanctifies it and the Holy Spirit gives you courage, energy, and strength.

The upright (saved) will have days of darkness, sickness, sorrow, poverty and depression. Clouds may lower around them, but their gloom will not last forever, because in due time the Lord will bring light.

It is as ordinary for the saved to be comforted as it is for the day to dawn.  Wait for the light; it will surely come.
