GOD’S WORD FOR OCTOBER 17

OCTOBER 17

OUR PERSONAL PROMISES

Psalm 71:3

“Be my strong refuge, To which I may resort continually; You have given the commandment to save me, For You are my rock and my fortress.”

Ephesians 6:10

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”

Hebrews 13:5

“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”  So we may boldly say:

The Lord is my helper: I will not fear.  What can man do to me?

Amplified version:

“I will never (under any circumstances) dessert you (nor give you up nor leave

you without support, nor will I in any degree leave you helpless), nor will I

forsake or let you down or relax my hold on you (assuredly not)!!!”

2Samuel 22:31

“As for God, his way is perfect:  The word of Jehovah is tried;  He is a shield unto all them that take refuge in him.”

Ps 86:17

“You, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.”

This month we will read choices from Charles Spurgeon’s (known affectionately as the “prince of preachers”)  devotional, “Beside Still Waters.”   It’s no secret that this world system is getting more evil by the day.  We have to stand strong in the Lord and look to Him more than ever to get through, and to be guided through, what is in the future……..known and allowed  by Him alone…..as well as whatever personal things we are experiencing in our lives.

PASTOR SPURGEON:

When we face unforeseen things,  we take inventory of our strength and find it to be less than we thought and less than we need.  Do not let your heart fail when you have this promise to fall back on, for it guarantees all that you can possibly need:

Isaiah 41:10

“‘Do not fear, for I am with you;  Do not be afraid, for I am your God.   I will strengthen you, I will also help you,  I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.’”

God has strength unending, and He can communicate that strength to you, and His promise is that He will do so.  He will be the food for your soul and the health of your heart, and thus He will give you strength.  There is no telling how much power God can put into a person who has trusted Him for salvation and for this life on earth.

When divine strength comes, human weakness is no longer a hindrance. Do we remember times of labor and trial when we received such special strength that we wondered at ourselves?  In the midst of danger, we were calm.  Under grief we were resigned.  In slander, we were self-contained.  In sickness, we were patient.

The fact is that God gives unexpected strength when unusual trials come.  We rise out of our feeble selves.  Cowards play the hero, foolish ones have wisdom given them, and the silent receive in that moment what they shall speak.

My own weakness makes me shrink, but God’s promise makes me brave.  Lord strengthen me according to Your Word.

In addition to the strength promised in  Isaiah 41:10, He also promises help when we cannot act alone.  He says “I will  help you.”   Strength within is supplemented by help from without.  God can raise up allies in our warfare if it seems good in His sight.  Even if He doesn’t send human assistance, He Himself will be at our side, and this is even better.  He is better than a thousand human helpers.

His help is timely, for He is a very present help in time of trouble (Ps 46:1).  His help is wise, for He knows how to give what is perfect for us.  It is effective, and He carries all the burdens and supplies all the needs.  Because He has already been our help, we feel confidence in Him for the present and the future.

Rom 8:26 tells us:

“the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses.”
