This month we will read choices from Charles Spurgeon’s (known affectionately as the “prince of preachers”) devotional, “Beside Still Waters.” It’s no secret that this world system is getting more evil by the day. We have to stand strong in the Lord and look to Him more than ever to get through, and to be guided through, what is in the future……..known and allowed by Him alone…..as well as whatever personal things we are experiencing in our lives.
PASTOR SPURGEON:
I speak to some whom I know are under a severe trial. You seem to have given up, but I beg you to call on the name of the Lord. You cannot perish praying; no one ever has. If you perished praying, you would be a new wonder in the universe. A praying soul in hell is an utter impossibility.
A person calling on God and being rejected, impossible! The supposition is not to be entertained. “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2:21.
God cannot lie. He must quit His nature, forfeit His claim to mercy, and destroy His character of love if He refuses to hear a sinner who repents and calls on His name. There will come a day when He will say, “When I called, you did not answer.” (Isaiah 65:12), but that is not today. Where there is life, there is hope.
“Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 3:15).
Call on God now. This warrant of grace runs through all the regions of life. “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
If you do not know Jesus Christ, troubles may force you to face a stern reality. Have you ever been on the edge of death? Have you ever had your body racked with pain and a chance of recovery only one in ninety nine? Have you ever felt that death was near? Have you ever peered into eternity with anxious eyes? Have you ever pictured hell and thought you were there? Have you ever thought of being shut out of heaven?
It is in these times that God’s Holy Spirit works great things. Christ is pleased when you are brought low and forced to cry to God. He is pleased because this is the stepping stone to genuine trust in Him.

Once you prevail with God and believe in Him you will have deliverance. Remember this: the one thing necessary for eternal life is to trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. You know the story. Christ came down from heaven and took your sins on His shoulders. He died as your substitute, and if Christ suffered for you, you cannot suffer that way. Jesus paid your debts, and you are free.
If you believe this, then you are as pure as the angels in heaven. May God bring you to faith for Jesus’ sake, and may you live in gratitude to
