This month we will read choices from Charles Spurgeon’s (known affectionately as the “prince of preachers”)  devotional, “Beside Still Waters.”   It’s no secret that this world system is getting more evil by the day.  We have to stand strong in the Lord and look to Him more than ever to get through, and to be guided through, what is in the future……..known and allowed  by Him alone…..as well as whatever personal things we are experiencing in our lives.

PASTOR SPURGEON:

Do you know that great things are to be had for the asking?  Have you ever thought about it?  Does it stimulate you to pray fervently?  All heaven lies before the grasp of the asking saint.  All the promises of God are rich and inexhaustible, and their fulfillment is to be had by prayer.  Jesus said, “All things have been delivered to Me by My Father.”  (Matthew 11:27), and Paul says, “All are yours.  And you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s.”  (1 Corinthians 3:22-23).  Who would not pray when all things are handed over to us?

Yes, and the promises that were first made to special individuals are all made to you if you are saved.   Israel went through the Red Sea ages ago, yet we read in Psalm 66:6:

“He turned the sea into dry land. They went through the river on foot.  There we will rejoice in Him.”

Only Jacob was present at Peniel, yet Hosea says, “There He spoke to us.” (Hosea 12:4).

Paul wants to give us a great promise for times of need, and so he quotes, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” in Hebrews 13:5.  Where did Paul get that?  It is the assurance that the Lord gave to Jacob, “I will not leave you.” In Genesis 28:15.

Was this promise for Jacob only?  NO!  It is also for us.  “No prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation.”  (2 Peter 1:20).  All Scripture is ours.  See how God appears to Solomon at night and says, “Ask!  What shall I give you?” in 1 Kings 3:5.  Solomon asks for wisdom in verse 3:9.   So James tells us in James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”  Is that just for Solomon?  NO!

Is not this like our Savior’s words?  “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.(Matthew 6:33).

Thus you see the Lord’s promises have many fulfillments, and they are waiting to pour their treasures into the lap of prayer!
