GOD’S WORD FOR FEBRUARY 28

FEBRUARY 28

OUR PERSONAL PROMISES

********** ***********

Hebrews 12:5-11

“and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons:

‘My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord,  nor faint when you are punished by Him;  For whom the Lord loves He disciplines,  and He punishes every son whom He accepts.’

It is for discipline that you endure; God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?  But if you are without discipline, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons.  Furthermore, we had earthly fathers to discipline us, and we respected them; shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. For the moment, all discipline seems not to be pleasant, but painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.”

1 Corinthians 11:32

“But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.”

Proverbs 12:1

“One who loves discipline loves knowledge but one who hates rebuke is stupid.”

Deuteronomy 8:5

“So you are to know in your heart that the Lord your God was disciplining you just as a man disciplines his son.”

Job 5:17

“Behold, happy is the person whom God disciplines, So do not reject the discipline of the Almighty.”

Proverbs 3:12

“For whom the Lord loves He disciplines, Just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights.”

Our book for this month  is called “100 NAMES OF GOD”  written by Christopher D. Hudson.  Each day we’ll take one Hebrew name for God as given in the Bible to study and relate to.

JEHOVAH – MAKKEH

THE LORD WHO STRIKES (DISCIPLINES) YOU

“I will not look on you with pity;  I will not spare you.  I will repay you for your conduct and for the detestable practices among you.  Then you will know that it is I, the Lord, who strikes you.”

Ezekiel 7:9

“Discipline” is another word for “training.”  It’s having (and following) a clear set of expectations, requirement, and consequences in order to create an environment that will bring out the best in an individual or in a team, family, military unit, or class.

The Bible says that God disciplines His children in the same way that good parents train their kids – teaching values, imparting wisdom, setting boundaries, correcting misbehavior – God trains us.

Such discipline isn’t pleasant; it’s painful, as we’re told in Hebrews 12:11.  But it’s the only way we’ll ever grow into better people.

Athletes who get annoyed at their coach for having to spend time in the gym are shortsighted.  They don’t realize that the coach has their best interests in mind.  To an infinitely greater degree, God has our best interests in mind.  He does not want us to fail.  God disciplines us for His glory, for the world’s good, and for our own growth in godliness.

What are ways you have seen God discipline His children?

PRAYER

JEHOVAH – MAKKEH, thank You for the gift of discipline.  Please help me to remember that You are shaping my life into something beautiful.  Please help me to trust you more.  Amen
