GOD’S WORD FOR MAY 9
MAY 9
OUR PERSONAL PROMISES
Philippians 2:9
“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Exodus 20:7
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”
Psalm 9:10
“And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.”
Psalm 7:17
I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, And will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.
Psalm 8:1
“O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens!”
Ephesians 1:20-22
“which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come, and He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church.”
Psalm 29:2
“Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”

We have a few days left in the book “100 NAMES OF GOD” written by Christopher D. Hudson. Each day we’ll take one Hebrew name for God as given in the Bible to study and relate to. Then we’ll be changing to another book.
HASHEM
THE NAME
Leviticus 24:11
“the son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name with a curse; so they brought him to Moses.”
In Biblical times, you weren’t given a name just because it sounded interesting or unique. On the contrary, your name spoke of your origin, identity, or destiny. For example, MOSES means “drawn from the water” and SAMUEL means “God has heard.”
What about God’s name? As we’ve seen in these pages, the Bible lists dozens and dozens of divine names and descriptions, each one giving insight into God’s nature. Perhaps the most intriguing of them all is HA-SHEM, which means “The Name.”
Calling God by the name “The Name” was a way of honoring God’s holiness because devout Jews considered His name too holy to come out of their mouth. Calling Him “The Name” was also a way of saying “our God needs no introduction.” It acknowledged the truth that God’s identity and nature are far too lofty and grand to quantify. The name HA-SHEM became generic shorthand for all that God is.
The simple truth is our God is indescribable. He cannot be labeled, certainly not by the limited abilities of humankind.
If asked, how would you describe God to an irreligious friend?
PRAYER

HaShem, thank You for being so immense that You cannot even be named. I don’t fully understand all the aspects of Your character, but please reveal more of Yourself to me. Amen
