Matthew 14
SECOND LESSON:
THE WATER THAT THREATENS TO BE OVER OUR HEAD IS UNDER CHRIST’S FEET!
All of us encounter winds of adversity, storms that cause us to lose our financial balance, or a health breakdown that threatens our emotional physical well-being. Or maybe it’s a relationship gone sour that has caused us emotional distress. That situation, no matter how painful, is one that Christ has fully under His control. Today He sits with it under His feet. Let us see Christ walking over the sea of God’s wrath and inviting us to join Him. Let us see Christ triumphing over the sting of death and inviting us to join Him.
LET US SEE HIM AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER, WITH US AT HIS SIDE!
Just this morning I spoke to a woman on the phone telling me about her excruciating divorce. Her husband had been unfaithful, and now wants joint custody of the children. There is little reason to think that he actually loves his children (If he did he should have continued to live with their mother!). He wants to assuage his guilt, to prove that he is a good dad who loves his kids after all. Fighting for the children is his way of venting his hostility toward his wife. The children are a bargaining chip in this selfish game of hateful revenge.
With the story of Peter fresh in my mind I told her, “Regardless of how intently you look at Christ, you must realize that the storm will not stop. The wind will continue to howl and the waves will continue to rise, but you must keep looking and walking.” Christ is totally aware of her plight. There will be tears and pain ahead, but by focusing on the triumphant Christ, she can make it. Yes, the waters that threaten to drown her are the waters upon which Christ is walking.
