TRUTH MUST BE ACCEPTED OR REJECTED
We all must go somewhere. Separated from God by our sin yet facing the prospect of living eternally, we all need help. Where do we go in our loneliness and pain? Where do we go with our unanswered questions? To whom shall we go when our own resources lead to despair? Should we go to education? To Money? To science? To whom shall we go?
“A test of the value of any given thing is whether or not a substitute can be found for it,” wrote Clarence McCartney. “If some other thing will serve just as well, then its value is limited. But if there is no substitute for it, it is of higher value.” No one else can take Christ’s place; no one can do for us what He has done. There truly is nowhere else to go.
F.B. Meyer wrote:
To whom shall we go when the light of the great white throne we suddenly find that snow-water can never cleanse hearts and consciences, on which sin has laid its defiling hand?
To whom shall we go when one by one the lights which we have trusted die out in the sky and neither sun nor stars shine for many days, and no small tempest lies upon the distraught soul, which hears the breakers dashing on an unknown shore?
To whom shall we go in the loneliness of age, in the pains of mortal sickness, in the hour of death, in the day of account, amid the splendor of a holiness which angels cannot face, and a purity before which the heavens are not clean?
A skeptic will deride us, the ritualist will offer us a meaningful yet empty rite. The philosopher will give us the presumptions of fallible men. The moralist will give us the guidance which he himself fails to follow. Only Christ could say,
Who has more insight into the nature of God than Christ? Who has made more astounding claims and then performed miracles to confirm them? What man on Planet earth has ever spoken as has this One? Whose death can make atonement for our sins?
