GOD’S WORD FOR FEBRUARY 18

GOD’S WORD FOR FEBRUARY 18

We are reading from a daily devotional  called “Running To Win” written by Erwin Lutzer  and the late, great D.L. Moody.   Erwin Lutzer is a light in our day as D.L. Moody was in his.

THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

1 Timothy 6:6

“Godliness with contentment is great gain.”

D.L. Moody

WOULD TO God we might all be able to say with Paul – “I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel” (Acts 20:33).  The Lord had made him partaker of His grace, and he was soon to be a partaker of His glory, and earthly things looked very small.  “Godliness with contentment is great gain.”  He wrote to Timothy:  “having food and raiment let us be therewith content.” (1 Timothy 6:6-8).  Observe that he puts godliness first.  No worldly gain can satisfy the human heart.  Roll the whole world in and still there would be room.

ERWIN LUTZER

Godliness with contentment.  We have all met many people who are discontent – perhaps even most of them are.  No doubt, we ourselves are guilty of the same sin.  Someone has described contentment as accepting what God gives and does not crave more.

Of course, God may sometimes take us from a high place and bring us low, or He may ask us to change vocations.  When Peter decided to follow Jesus, he had to leave the fishing business.  Undoubtedly he thought, “Without the fishing business to depend upon for an income, will I be able to depend on Christ to meet my needs?”  He would have to learn to submit to a new Master and abide by the new lifestyle – and to be content.

How do we learn contentment?  The first and most important steps to give God praise right where we are, even in the midst of discouragement, reversals, and discontentment.  When we thank God for what He has brought into our lives, we begin to learn how to be content no matter where we find ourselves.

PRAYER

Father, You never abandon us.  Please strengthen me today so I might believe You are working in my circumstances and that I will be content.
