GOD’S WORD FOR APRIL 16 ~ ~ Isaiah 53:3 Amp ~ ~ “He was despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and pain and acquainted with grief; And like One from whom men hide their faces
He was despised, and we did not appreciate His worth or esteem Him.”

Jesus has many names as God and as part of the Trinity, but as a man on earth, we are told that He was the Man of Sorrows — not a man who experienced sorrow, (although He certainly did) or a man who understood sorrow, but a man OF Sorrows, almost as if His very substance was sorrow.

He sorrowed for sin, He sorrowed for the spiritual loss of the people He loved, who will be judged at the end. He sorrowed for the physical pain, tragedies, and grief that was put onto the human race because of Sin.

He wasn’t exuberant, like John, or spontaneous like Peter, nor was He subdued like Nathaniel. He was sorrowful. Sorrowful because of His love for the sinners of this world, and His ability to know and experience the inner thoughts and feelings of each one.

Another part of His sorrow was the fact that He was the only human being on earth who understood spiritual things. Before His sacrifice, no one was saved, and before the Holy Spirit was given, no one could understand what just happened. He could not unburden Himself even with His closest followers and friends, for even right up to the cross, they did not understand.

He had the Father until the final hours, and that communion is what sustained Him, but then, He lost that support and enduring fellowship for those dark hours. “My God, why hast thou forsaken me”

In the Garden of Gethsemane, before His crucifixion, the depth of His sorrow would have killed an ordinary man. He was, in all senses save sin, an ordinary man. He didn’t go to the cross as God in all His power, He went in full humanity. That humanity, in the Garden, experienced the grievous and sinful moments of EVERY PERSON FOR ALL TIME—from the beginning of time until the end—every one, at the same time!!! Only His Love and determination to save His people from their sins kept Him going through it, and kept Him alive. The Father couldn’t help Him. He had to turn His back on Him, which only added heavily to His sorrow, as well as that of the Father.

This is why He knows when we are sorrowful. He TRULY KNOWS. He has literally been there—-within our lives, within our hearts, as He relives it with us. We can lay it all on Him because He knows exactly how we feel already. He yearns to carry our burdens.

“Blessed be the Lord, who daily bears our burden, The God who is our salvation.” Psalm 68:19
