GOD’S WORD FOR JUNE 1

JUNE 1

OUR PERSONAL PROMISES

*** ***

Galatians 2:16

“knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”

Ephesians 2:8-9

“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,  not of works, lest anyone should boast.”

Isaiah 64:6

“But we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away.”

Colossians 2:13-14

“And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,  having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”

Romans 4:2

“For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.”

Romans 4:6

“just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works:”

We will be reading from a book by Erwin Lutzer, President of Moody Bible Institute.  It’s a short book about Christ’s sacrifice for us.  It’s called simply, “For Us.”

Mark 15:37-38

“And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed His last.   Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”

John 19:30

“So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.”

“It is finished.”

In Greek, this cry of Jesus is one word, “tetelestai”, and in legal terms it could also mean, “paid in full.”  Jesus wants us to know that our sins are paid in full.  There is not one little bit left to “make up.”  (if you have repented and received Christ as Savior).

That’s good, because you or I can, at best, manage our sin’;  we cannot pay for it.  With one word, Jesus destroys “works righteousness” ~ the idea that we can help save ourselves through our own good works.  The gulf between our impurity and God’s holiness is too vast.  As commendable as good works are, they mean nothing when it comes to receiving the gift of our salvation.

(God doesn’t  “mark on the curve” ~ compare with others ~ ……And He doesn’t balance our “good works” and “bad works”.   We must be sin-free to enter heaven, and that’s impossible by our efforts.)

If you have received Christ, your sins are paid in full.

Yes, our sins are paid for, both past and future.  Yes, we still must confess those sins God brings to our attention to stay in fellowship with Him, but the record of our sins is a blank page in heaven, because of Jesus only!  Wonderful thought!!!
