GOD’S WORD FOR MAY 3

GOD’S WORD FOR  MAY 3

We are reading from a daily devotional  called “Running To Win” written by Erwin Lutzer  and the late, great D.L. Moody.   Erwin Lutzer is a light in our day as D.L. Moody was in his.  Besides his many ministries, and many books, Pastor Lutzer was Senior Pastor at Moody Church in Chicago for 36 years and now serves as Pastor Emeritus there.  He is Chancelor and a former professor at Moody Bible Institute, where he taught Theology and Ministry, and now has numerous radio teachings.

IRONCLAD PROMISES

Numbers 6:24

“the Lord bless you and keep you.”

D.L. MOODY

God can do what He has done before.  He kept Joseph  in Egypt, Moses before Pharaoh, Daniel in Babylon, and enabled Elijah to stand before Ahab in that dark day.  I am so thankful that these I have mentioned were men of like passions with ourselves.

ERWIN LUTZER

Yes, as Moody said, God can keep us.  But sometimes our faith wavers.

God said to Abraham, “All the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever.” (Genesis 13:15).  But soon Abraham had doubts.   In fact, when there was a famine in the land of promise, Abraham and his family went down to Egypt.  There he sinned by trying to deceive Pharaoh.  Abraham shamefully betrayed his wife by lying, saying she was not his wife.  He had to leave Egypt in disgrace.  On another occasion he said in effect, “God you must understand I am old, and Sarah is old.  We can’t bear children anymore.  What about Eliezer of Damascus?  He is my trusted servant.  Could he be my heir?”  But God says, “Abraham, the answer is “no”.  The one who comes from you, your very own son is going to be the heir of the promise.”  (Genesis 15:1-6).

My point:  We can’t stand against the pressures trials bring unless we are “Standing on the promises,”  as the song reminds us.  We must believe God despite evidence to the contrary.  So, when God said to Abraham, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them….So shall your offspring be.”  (Genesis 15:5), that was not just a reminder of God’s power, but also a promise that was fulfilled.  The Lord did for Abraham and Sarah just as He had promised, and He will do so for us

Only those who kneel before God’s promises will stand when the trials come.

PRAYER

Father, no matter how hard the winds blow, please help me to keep standing on Your promises.

Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us, and if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
