GOD’S WORD FOR MAY 7

GOD’S WORD FOR  MAY 7

We are reading from a daily devotional  called “Running To Win” written by Erwin Lutzer  and the late, great D.L. Moody.   Erwin Lutzer is a light in our day as D.L. Moody was in his.  Besides his many ministries, and many books, Pastor Lutzer was Senior Pastor at Moody Church in Chicago for 36 years and now serves as Pastor Emeritus there.  He is Chancelor and a former professor at Moody Bible Institute, where he taught Theology and Ministry, and now has numerous radio teachings.

THE GREATEST EVENT

John 5:24

“Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me….He does not come into judgment.”

D.L. MOODY

In a prairie fire, when the wind is strong, the wall of flame often rolls along twenty feet high, destroying man and beast in its onward rush.  The frontiersmen know they cannot run as fast as that fire.  Not the fleetest horse can escape it.  But they just take a match and light the grass before them.  These flames sweep a space, and men follow and take their stand in the burned district, and are safe.  Over the place where they stand, the fire has already passed and there is nothing left to burn.    There is one spot on earth that the judgment of God has swept over.  Centuries ago the storm burst on Calvary and the Son of God endured it; and now, if we take our stand by the cross, we are safe for time and eternity.

ERWIN LUTZER

Jesus came to earth to protect us “from the wrath to cone” (Thessalonians 1:10).  The crucifixion represents God’s farthest reach.  God came our way.  The chasm that exists between us and God, our inability to live up to His standard of holiness – all of that was bridged by God Himself.  In effect, God says, “I am not just descending to humanity with a ladder, asking them to crawl on the ladder toward Me.  No, they are dead in trespasses and sins.  I am going to scoop them up and bring them to Myself.”  To do that, Jesus had to bear the wrath of God on our behalf.

PRAYER

Father, I love You because You first loved me.  I wish I loved You more, and I thank You that I stand under the shelter of Christ’s great work on the cross.

*** ***

Romans 1:18

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

** *

Romans 2:5

But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

** *

Romans 5:9

Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

** *

Romans 9:22-24

What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,  in order to make known the riches of his glory for vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory— even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles?

Revelation 20:12& 15

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done……. (but)  if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

(Our names are in the Book of Life if we have believed ONLY  in the sacrifice of Jesus for our sins and acknowledged Him as our personal Lord and Savior.)
