GOD’S WORD FOR JUNE 20

GOD’S WORD FOR JUNE 20

We are reading from a daily devotional  called “Running To Win” written by Erwin Lutzer  and the late, great D.L. Moody.   Erwin Lutzer is a light in our day as D.L. Moody was in his.  Besides his many ministries, and many books, Pastor Lutzer was Senior Pastor at Moody Church in Chicago for 36 years and now serves as Pastor Emeritus there.  He is  Chancelor and a former professor at Moody Bible Institute, where he taught Theology and Ministry, and now has numerous radio teachings.

ALL LIGHTS NEEDED

Philippians 2:15

“You shine as lights.”

D.L. MOODY

If we cannot be a lighthouse, let us be a candle.  In the old times, people used to come to the evening meetings bringing their own candles with them.  The first one would not make a great illumination, but as more people came, there was more light.  Suppose all Christians today were burning with a candlelight, would not God be more glorified?  If we cannot be a lighthouse, let us be a candle.

ERWIN LUTZER

We are called light.  Jesus didn’t say, “Now, you’ll be the light of the world after you get mature in walking with Me.”  No.  Early on, He said to His disciples, “You ARE the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14).  We might be a dim light or even a hidden light or a flickering one, but we already ARE the light of the world, such as it is.  We often underestimate our importance within the framework of God’s plan.  We are His representatives; we represent Christ to our families, to our neighbors, and to the wider culture.

Let’s think of ourselves as the moon in it’s relationship to the sun.  The moon has no light of its own, but it does reflect the sun’s light.  Just so, our dependence on Christ should help others see the light they need to navigate their spiritual and moral darkness.

Do you feel that being a light to those around you is a task beyond you?  Jesus went on and said we should live in such a way that others would see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven.

Do a sacrificial deed, say a word of encouragement, open the door to a conversation about Christ – you are on your way to let your light shine.

PRAYER

Father, please help me to reflect the light of Christ and teach me how to do it well.

Matthew 6:22-23

The eye is the lamp of the body; so then, if your eye is clear, your whole body will be full of light.   But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Ephesians 5:8-9

for you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light

(for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth)

Ephesians 5:13

But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.

Romans 2:19-21

and are confident that you yourself are a guide to people who are blind, a light to those in darkness,  a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of the immature, possessing in the Law the embodiment of knowledge and of the truth— you, therefore, who teach someone else, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that one is not to steal, do you steal?

2 Corinthians 4:6-7

For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

 But we have this treasure in earthen containers, so that the extraordinary greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves;

giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.
