GOD’S WORD FOR JUNE 9 ~ ~ Hebrews 1:3 ~ ~ “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:”
This verse is so all-encompassing, and so powerful in describing Jesus Christ and His glory, that I think we need to take it apart and look at it closer.
Let’s look first at the second part— “upholding all things by the Word of His power”. Notice this is in the present tense. He always has held things together, He is holding them now, and He always will hold all things together, in His and the Father’s plan. Let’s first talk about Him holding the material creation together.
The Amplified version, which takes into account the expanded meanings of the words in the original language, says it this way:
“upholding and maintaining and propelling all things [the entire physical and spiritual universe] by His powerful word [carrying the universe along to its predetermined goal].”
Take a moment and think about this. He holds ALL THINGS together. Don’t minimize it in your mind, and don’t spiritualize it. He truly holds all things in creation because they were all created BY AND THROUGH HIM!
Col 1:16 “For by Him all things were created in heaven and on earth, [things] visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him [that is, by His activity] and for Him.”
Since all things are made up of atoms, and He holds all things together, then if He would cease to hold things together, what would happen? We, along with all matter, would cease to exist! He didn’t created all things, then create the laws of physics, and just let the laws keep things going. Laws don’t have intelligence or power. They are one part of the system, but they can’t go by themselves. No, He holds it all together PERSONALLY! If He didn’t, it would all be gone instantly,
All atoms have protons, electrons and neutrons. If each negatively charged electron were not kept moving, it would drop toward the positively charged nucleus and every atom in the universe would be destroyed!!! He keeps them moving! Even non-believing scientists cannot explain what else would keep them moving. They throw names and processes out there, like “strong nuclear force” or “gluons” (which says nothing), they admit that they are baffled by this very important phenomenon By all logic, the negative electrons should be drawn to the positively charged protons in the nucleus of the atom, but they obediently circle.
On the other hand, if He wasn’t keeping the tiny nucleus of each atom together, it would explode as all the protons would shoot out violently, because like charges repel each other. But “somehow” the positively charged protons stay tightly together, despite their charge.
Remember, all matter in the universe is made up of atoms, so this is not an isolated situation. He LITERALLY holds all things together, materially.
Not only on the micro scale, but also on the large scale, He holds all things together. There is no chaos there. All things are in motion uniformly and in sync with each other, all under His control.
He put the stars in the sky, and calls each one by name.
Psalm 147:4 “He tells the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names.”
Every plant and animal on earth, including man, He holds together, and directs every reaction in our bodies—-chemical and physical reactions, muscles, organs, joints…………it’s a study in itself, as we’ve not even scratched the surface. We could spend a lifetime contemplating just this one phrase and never be able to wrap our minds around the fact that Jesus, our Lord and Savior HOLDS ALL THINGS TOGETHER~ ~ ~ SPIRITUALLY AND PHYSICALLY!!!!!
Lord, please help us to really let this sink in—the enormity of it, the beauty of it, and the spiritual glories of it. Help us to live in awe of You —-of all aspects of You—-and live humbly before You, knowing that despite being the God of all, You humbled Yourself to save us from our sins. That is incomprehensible in our finite minds, but we believe it because of Your Word. Help us to know that there is nothing that we can contribute to our salvation—not good works, not “being good”, not any church, sacraments, prayers. Adding these things with the idea of making ourselves look better, is an insult to You and, as Heb 6:6 said, “ seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.”
All You want is ourselves, in acknowledgment of our sins and Your Lordship in our lives, being one with You and living in gratitude for salvation, guidance and grace.
We praise You with all of our being!!!! In Your wonderful name, we ask these things, Amen
