GOD’S WORD FOR JULY 20
GOD’S WORD FOR JULY 20 ~ ~ Matthew 4:16~ ~ “The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light, And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a Light dawned.”
There are more than 200 species of fireflies around the world. Almost everyone has seen these small insects flying about or sitting in the grass. On dark summer nights they can be seen flashing their lights like ships far out at sea. As they flash, they are communicating very specific messages to one another.
The light created by fireflies is called cold light because it is produced without creating any heat. To make a flash, the firefly must make and mix a chemical called luciferin with oxygen and an enzyme called luciferase. This mixture is combined with a catalyst to create the flashes of light. The result is a method of producing light that is far more efficient than any source of light in your home. A relatively tiny amount of energy creates a generous amount of light.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have huge amounts of these chemicals to power cities? But that’s not God’s way. He had a different plan in mind for the fireflies and for us.
The flashes of the firefly tells others a lot about them. There are different species of fireflies, they’re out for different purposes that night, and are in different stages of life. Other fireflies are able to read these light signals and know these things, which are necessary for their lives, including reproduction.
John tells us in his gospel, 8:12, that Jesus said, “… I am the Light of the world; the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”
In Matthew 5:14, Jesus called us (those who are born again) lights of the world also, our light being, of course coming from Him. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;” He said.
We can, therefore, communicate with the True Light of the Universe, and with our fellow Christians, just like the fireflies with each other, through the Light of the Holy Spirit, unknown to the unlighted world around us.
Just like the other verses in the Word that tell of our separation from the unbelieving world, this is also a picture of that. We are “little sparks” from the One True Light, and the Holy Spirit produces the “chemical” to create that spark.
Jesus also told us to put our (His) light out for the world to see in Matthew 5:15~ ~ “ nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house” We aren’t just to be light in fellowship with other believers, but we are obligated to tell unbelievers of the Gospel.
This dark world needs the light of Christ, and each of us is obligated to show that light.
