GOD’S WORD FOR JUNE 15

GOD’S WORD FOR JUNE 15

We are reading from a daily devotional  called “Running To Win” written by Erwin Lutzer  and the late, great D.L. Moody.   Erwin Lutzer is a light in our day as D.L. Moody was in his.  Besides his many ministries, and many books, Pastor Lutzer was Senior Pastor at Moody Church in Chicago for 36 years and now serves as Pastor Emeritus there.  He is  Chancelor and a former professor at Moody Bible Institute, where he taught Theology and Ministry, and now has numerous radio teachings.

NOBODY LIKE JESUS

Hebrews 9:7

“Only the high priest goes, and he but once a year, and not without taking blood, which he offers for himself and for the unintentional sins of the people.”

D.L. MOODY

Look at the Roman soldier as he pushed his spear into the very heart of the God-man.  What  hellish deed!  But what was the next thing that took place?  Blood covered the spear!   OH! Thank God, the blood covers sin.  The very crowning act of sin brought out the crowning act of love:  the crowning act of wickedness was the crowning act of grace.

ERWIN LUTZER

We again see Moody’s ability to use imagery, simplicity, and a sense of immediacy when he says the blood covered the spear, signifying that the soldier, too, could be saved.  Moody was convinced that many people believed they had sinned too greatly to be forgiven, so in his messages, he constantly emphasized he expansive work of God’s grace.

At the cross, the dissidence between God’s love and God’s justice was resolved.  God’s love wanted to redeem humanity, but His justice wouldn’t allow it.  God has all of His attributes in equilibrium and in right proportions.  Where do we see the clearest evidence of God’s love?  At the cross.  Where is the clearest evidence of God’s justice?  At the cross.

Before the cross, the Old Testament saints were saved on credit;  God had fellowship with them on the basis of a sacrifice that was still to come;  in our case, our fellowship is based on the glorious fact that the sacrifice has already come.  In both cases, the sacrifice of Christ is the basis of salvation.

Yes, even those who crucified Christ, including the soldier who pierced His side, could have been forgiven if they came in humble faith to the Man they nailed to the cross.  Let us proclaim this message of hope to a world lost in hopelessness.

PRAYER

Father, I love You because You first loved  me.  Thank You that the blood of Christ is sufficient to cover all my sins!
